Evocative Landscapes

The layers of wax create a dreamlike quality that evokes a feeling of peace and tranquility for the viewer.

Exploration of Tools & Materials

In Week 1, we'll acquaint ourselves with the materials for the course, including ink, charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, and water-soluble pencils. Our experimentation will lead to large abstract designs on A2 heavy cartridge paper. We'll craft a handmade meandering sketchbook to study and document these designs, laying the groundwork for our future landscape work. We'll also create cradleboards using cutouts from the abstract paintings as the base layer for our final project. Furthermore, we'll get mixed media and watercolor paper ready with different grounds in preparation for Week 2.

Crafting Evocative Paper Landscapes

During the second week, we’ll build upon the techniques learned in the previous week to create captivating paper landscapes. We'll delve into a range of methods, such as using spray paint, incorporating gold leaf, experimenting with collage, utilizing glue sticks and modeling paste. These techniques will infuse diversity and innovation into your landscape artwork, making it truly evocative.

Mastering Image Transfer Techniques

In the upcoming week, we'll delve deeply into the art of image transfer. I will guide you through a variety of methods to seamlessly incorporate your own tree silhouette photographs into your mixed media landscapes. These transferred images will become an integral part of your paper artwork. Additionally, we will put the finishing touches on the cradleboard underpainting, setting the stage for the grand finale of our creative journey.

Mastering Encaustic Wax and Alternative Finishes in Depth

As we approach the final week, we'll immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of encaustic wax, a medium that will breathe life and depth into your artwork. This week will be a journey into the heart of encaustic techniques, where we'll explore the art of embedding collage elements within layers of wax, crafting intricate textures that bring your creations to life. For those who may prefer alternative finishes, fear not, as we'll also venture into the realm of artistic versatility. I'll introduce you to various alternatives, including gloss gel, cold wax, and pouring mediums, allowing you to choose the finish that resonates most with your artistic vision. This week promises to be an exciting and enriching experience, where your artistic horizons will expand, and your creations will reach new dimensions of creativity and expression.

Susan McCreevy Artist has really created a special experience with this course. I have played around with gel printing a lot, so I was blown away by how much of her approach was new to me. She is a wonderful teacher, soothing voice and very clear explanations at a perfect pace; she starts with basics but builds to finished pieces that are rich and evocative; it seems like magic! I had never worked with collagraphs before and now I look for things to make my own with every day! :) It is so appealing to be able to do something celebratory with photo images I have captured rather than just keep them on my cell phone forever. Little did I know they can be reference photos for art! In a digital world, getting our hands messy with glue and paint seems so cathartic. Besides being a creative outlet, I think all that technique of being loose and free making the papers is also really absorbing and fun. Thank you Susan McCreevy!
